Rich, chocolaty, and loaded with sweet banana flavor, this chocolate banana bread turns those spotted bananas on your counter into an irresistible snack that’s wonderful any time of day.

Chocolate Banana Bread

If you love banana bread but never say no to chocolate, this chocolate banana bread combines the best of both. Cocoa powder and plenty of chocolate chips create rich chocolate flavor, while sour cream keeps every slice exceptionally moist and tender. Ripe bananas add natural sweetness and plenty of banana flavor. It comes together like a classic quick bread but tastes almost like chocolate cake—perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or dessert.

Love chocolate quick breads? Be sure to try my chocolate zucchini bread too—it’s just as rich, moist, and chocolatey.

“Exquisite, fabulous, hands down the most beautiful, moist, decadent, delicious, cake-like, chocolaty, awesome banana bread I’ve ever had.”

What You’ll Need To Make Chocolate Banana Bread

ingredients for chocolate banana bread
  • All-purpose flour: Provides the structure for the loaf. Measure it by spooning the flour into your measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can pack in too much flour and lead to a dry loaf.
  • Natural unsweetened cocoa powder: Gives the bread its rich chocolate flavor. Be sure to use natural cocoa powder rather than Dutch-process cocoa, as its acidity reacts with the baking soda to help the loaf rise properly.
  • Baking soda: The leavening that gives the bread its lift and tender crumb. It reacts with the acidity in the natural cocoa powder and sour cream. (Baking powder is never a suitable substitute; for more on the difference between the two, see my guide to baking soda vs. baking powder.)
  • Salt: Enhances both the chocolate and banana flavors while balancing the sweetness. All sweet treats need a touch of salt!
  • Unsalted butter: Adds richness and buttery flavor. Make sure it’s softened to room temperature so it creams easily with the sugar.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the bread while also contributing to its soft, tender texture.
  • Large eggs: Bind the batter together and provide structure.
  • Mashed bananas: The riper the bananas, the better. Look for peels that are heavily speckled or mostly brown, as overripe bananas are sweeter, softer, and mash more easily into the batter. Frozen bananas work well too (see my post how to freeze bananas for details on freezing and thawing). Pro tip: To quickly ripen bananas, store them in a loosely sealed brown paper bag.
  • Sour cream: One of the keys to this recipe. It makes the loaf exceptionally moist and tender while its acidity works with the baking soda to create a lighter texture. Full-fat plain Greek yogurt can be substituted in a pinch.
  • Vanilla extract: Rounds out the flavors and enhances both the chocolate and banana.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Create little pockets of melted chocolate throughout the loaf for a double dose of chocolate. Feel free to stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch, or substitute some of the chocolate chips with white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a fun variation.

STEP-BY-STEP Instructions

Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This step helps create a tender crumb, so don’t rush it.

Pro tip: Make sure your butter is fully softened before you start — it should give easily when you press it but still hold its shape. If it’s too cold, it won’t cream properly; if it’s too warm and greasy, you won’t get that light, fluffy texture.

Step 3: Add the eggs. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated before adding the next.

Step 4: Add the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and beat gently until just combined.

Step 5: Mix in the bananas, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix in the mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla until just evenly incorporated. It’s important to avoid overmixing once the flour is added, as it develops the gluten in the flour, which can make quick breads tough instead of tender.

Step 6: Fold in the chocolate chips. Add the chocolate chips and fold with a rubber spatula until evenly incorporated. The batter will be quite thick—that’s exactly what you want. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly level, as it will even out as it bakes.

Step 7: Bake and cool. Bake for about 70 minutes, or until done. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs attached but no wet batter. Because chocolate batters are dark, it’s harder to judge doneness by color alone. Let the bread rest in the pan briefly, then turn it out onto a rack to finish cooling. The bread is best freshly baked, but keeps at room temperature for up to 3 days or can be frozen for longer storage.

Freezing tip: If you’d like to enjoy the bread as an occasional snack when a craving strikes, before freezing, slice the bread and wrap the slices individually— that way you can pull out exactly what you need rather than thawing the whole loaf.

Chocolate Banana Bread

Chocolate Banana Bread
Deeply chocolaty and wonderfully tender, this chocolate banana bread is the perfect way to use up your ripe bananas.
Servings: 1 (9 x 5-in) loaf
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
  • ¼ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder, such as Hershey's (see note)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas, from 2 to 3 brown bananas
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and set a rack in the middle position. Grease a 9 x 5-in (23 x 13-cm) loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk until there are no more lumps in the cocoa powder and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or beaters, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, incorporating well after each addition. Add the dry ingredients and beat gently until just combined. Add the bananas, sour cream and vanilla and mix on low speed to combine. Fold in the chocolate chips. Do not overmix.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Let the loaf rest in the pan for about 10 minutes, run a blunt knife around the edges to loosen, then turn it out onto a rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • There are two types of unsweetened cocoa powder: natural (such as Hershey's) and Dutch-processed. Dutch-processed will not work in this recipe.
  • Make-Ahead/Freezing Instructions: The bread is best enjoyed fresh, but it can be wrapped in aluminum foil and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you'd like to keep it longer, the bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. After it is completely cooled, wrap it securely in aluminum foil, freezer wrap, or place in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

I have made this a few times and have tinkered with the recipe. I like it better and it healthier with the following changes. Tastes just as good too. Substitute organic coconut oil in one to one ratio for butter, substute organic yogurt for sour cream. (I make my own yogurt and it is very think so Greek yogurt is probably a good choice.) Also one to one ratio substitution for sour cream. I substitute dark chocolate chunks for the semi sweet chocolate chips. And I add half a cut of chopped walnuts. I also use frozen very ripe bananas as they are very sweet and you can lower the sugar you add based on the sweetness of the bananas. Good recipe as posted though also.

This is so light, moist, and flavorful and everyone I give it to loves it, and wants the recipe. I use Hersey’s Special Dark cocoa, which is a blend of Natural and Dutched cocoas, and it works beautifully. We love nuts so I use walnuts or pecans. I will make this recipe until I can’t bake any more.

    Hi Jenn,
I’ve made this once before and would like to make it again for a holiday party. I’d like to know if I can substitue sour cream for applesauce because that’s what I have right now. If so, do I need to change anything (like baking temp and time?). Thanks so much for your great recipes.

    • Hi Shirley, I’ve never tried it with applesauce. I think you could get away with it, but the bread may not rise quite as much. Let me know how it turns out!

This recipe is perfect! So delicious and moist. My family requested for me to make it again for Thanksgiving. This will be a great homemade Christmas present to give friends and families. Thanks for another awesome recipe.

  • Will bread flour work in this recipe?

    • Hi Cheryl, I’m sorry, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I made this recipe twice and it was super moist and very tasty. I omitted the chocolate chips and added lots of chopped pecans.

This recipe was a real winner with my family. Chocolate is always a big hit but adding the banana made it very moist and delicious. Will be making this again soon. Perfect with a cup of cappichino.

I made this yesterday, and it was delish. I didn’t have sour cream, so substituted with greek yogurt as some others have suggested, and it still came out amazing! This one is a keeper!
